WHPW's 2017 Volunteer of the Year
by posted 03/22/2018

Congrats to Kelly Palaia!

At the Warren Recreation Sport's Recognition Dinner on Monday, March 19th, Kelly Palaia was presented with the 2017 WHPW Volunteer of the Year Award by WHPW President Andy Marion.

Here is the speech Andy made in honor of this most deserving recipient:

Watchung Hills Pop Warner Football and Cheer is proud to announce Kelly Palaia as their Volunteer of the Year. Kelly has served as our Snack Shack Director for the last several years, along with Co-Director Shawn Grabko. Our Snack Shack operations are a key financial contributor to WHPW’s bottom line, and much of this is as a result of Kelly’s hard work, dedication and innovation.

On days when our teams are at home, Kelly is on the scene from 7:30 in the morning until 6 in the evening, seamlessly coordinating the other snack shack volunteers coming and going throughout the day, preparing and selling the food, and ensuring all functions are running smoothly, even managing to sneak out for a few minutes to watch her son Jimmy when it is his team’s turn to play. When it comes to multitasking, Kelly is the queen.

Our Snack Shack customers are delighted to find a range of tasty options offered, not just your typical ballpark fare. Kelly has been instrumental in elevating our offerings beyond hotdogs and hamburgers, and there is something there for all palates.

Another of Kelly’s accomplishments is that she instituted a program for after-practice nights in August which offers food to all of the players. She can be seen on sweltering nights over by the smoking grills, working very hard as she always does. The kids really benefit from knowing they can grab a quick bite and drink as soon as they step off the field, rather than having to wait until they get home or off-premises and the program has been a nice fund raiser for us as well.

And Kelly instituted a food and drink donation procedure, ensuring that WHPW’s profitability has been greatly increased by not having to purchase these goods.

Finally, Kelly was the creator and organizer of our first ever St. Patricks Day party and fundraiser which was held at Forest Lodge on March 17th. This is sure to become an annual event.

In between all of this, Kelly is mom to 3 kids, 2 of whom are in the program, and lives in Warren. She is extremely dedicated to our organization and has been a significant contributor in many ways since she arrived on the scene.

It is for all of these reasons that we have chosen her to be Volunteer of the Year! Thank you Kelly!

Congratulations to our Eastern Region Little Scholars!
by posted 01/16/2018

Dear Families-as you are hopefully aware, participating in Pop Warner is not just an athletic pursuit, but an academic one as well. This is why report cards are required to be submitted at the beginning of each season. In addition, players can apply to be a Little Scholar each year, and recipients are chosen based on academic excellence and non-sports related extra-curricular activities.

The list of 2018 Eastern Region Scholars is out and we are very proud of our recipients. They are:

Dante Gioia

William ("Billy") Black

Kayla Palaia

Jake Checchio

Olivia Checchio

Alexandra Angelini

All recipients will be reviewed for the National Little Scholar program, with results to be announced in April.

Congrats to our Little Scholars and their families!

WHPW honors Volunteer of the Year, Carl Checchio!
by posted 03/08/2017

Dear Families-the Warren Township Recreation Commission recognized Warren Township sports groups at a dinner on  March 2 and each sport honored a Volunteer of the Year. Below is the presentation made by our President, Andy Marion, in honor of Carl's notable contributions to the WHPW organization this last year:

Carl Checchio has been with Watchung Hills Pop Warner since 2007 and over the past 10 years he has served as both a Board Member and a Football Coach.  Carl has been Vice President and Executive Board Member since 2011 and the Director of Field Operations since 2007.  He is responsible for all upkeep and maintenance at the Pop Warner complex at 101 Old StirlingRoad in Warren.  His duties are endless and entail everything from ensuring that the sod practice field is lined and ready to go for the August football scrimmage jamboree to routine maintenance and replacement including installing garage doors on the P.A. booth and the Speed& Agility barn.   On game days, Carl is at the complex from 7:30am until 6:30pm and his job never ends.  On the coaching front, Carl has coached numerous teams from Flag to Mitey Mite and this year, will be the Head Coach of one of our Jr. PeeWee football teams.

While Carl has always done a superb job for the organization, he exceeded all expectations in 2016.  For the longest time we have wanted to have our Snack Shack located near the turf field (it was previously in the Field House.)   After numerous discussions and encouragement, we were able to get Carl to take on the project of constructing a new Snack Shack.  Through his great work, along with that of his brother, Rob Checchio, we now have a fully operational Snack Shack adjacent to the entrance gate of the turf field.  This project included extensive site work and excavation, design and ordering of the custom shed, securing contributions from other craftsmen, such as flooring, granite countertops and shelving, electrical, etc.  In total, this project was a $40,000 retail job which cost the Watchung Hills Pop Warner program nothing.  After using the Snack Shack this past fall, we notice an extremely significant increase in our concession sales.  Thank you to Carl and his brother, Rob, for their generosity and great work on behalf of Watchung Hills Pop Warner.

Congratulations to Carl, make sure to thank him when you see him roaming the complex!!
