The Board of Watchung Hills Pop Warner (WHPW) would like to welcome you to the 2013 Football and Cheer Season, the 39th for our program. First and foremost, we would like to thank each and every family that has been involved in our program. We truly appreciate your efforts in making Watchung Hills Pop Warner a success and tremendous experience for so many young boys and girls.
We would like to share with you some information about Pop Warner that should help answer questions you may have. Please read through this section and if you still have questions feel free to contact our President, Andy Marion, at and your question will be promptly answered. Once again we want to thank all of the families who have enrolled and are interested in enrolling their children in our program.
All children ages 5-15 living in Warren, Watchung, Long Hill Township, Bernards Township, Berkeley Heights and New Providence are eligible to register for Watchung Hills Pop Warner. Teams are organized by strict age and weight requirements ensuring a level playing field for all. Practices and games are held at our state-of-the-art football complex with FieldTurf playing surface, a strength and conditioning facility led by a former Rutgers University football star, Will Beckford and field house with film and locker rooms located at 101 Old Stirling Road in Warren. All of the program’s football and cheerleading coaches are Rutgers certified and involved in numerous off-season coaching clinics in order to provide your children with the most effective and safest instruction possible.
The Watchung Hills Pop Warner program is coming off an incredibly successful 2011 campaign which saw two of our competitive cheer teams place second and third at the National Cheer Competition held at Disney World in Orlando, Florida; our Pee Wee football team winning the Garden State Championship Game held at Rutgers Stadium and our Junior PeeWee football team making it to the semi-finals of the Garden State Games Tournament.
Entering its 39th year, the Watchung Hills Pop Warner Program is a non-profit youth organization and is organized under the Pop Warner Little Scholars Program which was established in 1929 and is the country’s longest tenured youth organization. Pop Warner Little Scholars, Inc. (PWLS) is a non-profit organization that provides youth football and cheer & dance programs for participants in 42 states and several countries around the world. Consisting of approximately 425,000 young people ranging from ages 5 to 16 years old, Pop Warner is the largest youth football, cheer and dance program in the world.
Pop Warner was founded in 1929, continues to grow and serves as the only youth football, cheerleading & dance organization that requires its participants to maintain academic standards in order to participate.
Pop Warner's commitment to academics is what separates the program from other youth sports around the world.
As the only national youth sports organization that requires scholastic aptitude to participate, Pop Warner is committed to developing America's young people on the field and off. Each year Pop Warner continues to expand its efforts in team and activity participation, as well as visibility and outreach in the community.
Since 1929, the Pop Warner Programs Philosophy has been that athletics and scholastics go hand in hand. At every level, Pop Warner programs seek to develop well-rounded young men and women who learn not only the fundamentals of football, cheerleading, and dance but also the importance of education in an atmosphere conducive to developing sound character while having a good time.
The #1 concern of our program is the safety of our student athletes. In order to provide the safest environment possible we follow strict mandatory equipment requirements. All of our coaches are R.U.T.G.E.R.S. certified and attend numerous coaching clinics and risk management training. There is a C.P.R. certified coach on the field at all times. We have certified E.M.T.’s at all of our games. All of our coaches undergo background checks and are registered with the Warren Police Department. An enforced national rule book, put together by Pop Warner Little Scholars, incorporates time-tested rules and is followed by all of the teams in the Mountain Valley Conference which we are a part of. We allow rosters of up to 35 players and have an established “minimum play” rule which serves to enhance the team concept that is central to our program. The national set of rules includes starting practice for our tackle program on August 1st. WHPW has always delivered an open and honest dialogue with our parents about our requirements and the commitment expected. We believe that a full August schedule is necessary to ensure that every student athlete is prepared and properly conditioned for the physical nature of the sport. Again, our concern is for the safety of our student athletes!
AFFILIATION WITH WHRHS
Watchung Hills Pop Warner has a strong relationship and affiliation with the Watchung Hills Regional High School Football Program. WHRHS Head Football Coach Marc Crisafi holds off season coaching clinics for all of our coaches. This relationship allows our coaches to implement coaching strategies and offensive and defensive systems that mirror that of the high school. When our players reach high school they will be familiar with the systems in place and the coaching philosophies being employed. This seamless integration to the next level for our student athletes is important to a successful continuation of the Watchung Hills Regional High School football program.
The Watchung Hills Pop Warner Complex located at 101 Old Stirling Road in Warren is truly top-of-the-line. We have a field house which is equipped with a locker room, film room, conference room for Board meetings and fully stocked Snack Shack. Our irrigated sod grass practice field is always in top notch condition while the Field Turf playing surface for practice and games is the same used by many NFL and College teams. The complex is equipped with several bleachers, a press box, scoreboard and portable lighting for practices and games as we enter the shortened daylight periods in the Fall. In 2011, we were asked by the Mountain Valley Conference to host the Conference Championship Games at our complex. We were then asked to host two rounds of the Pop Warner Eastern Region Tournament and Garden State Tournament. All of the postseason games played at our complex were a great success allowing WHPW to showcase our complex as well as our town to guests from around the northeast. It is a testament to all of the hard work provided by those in our program as well as our township authorities which allows us to provide our student athletes the best experience possible.
If you decide to become a part of the Watchung Hills Pop Warner family you will not be disappointed. We are dedicated to doing everything possible to create a world class organization that will allow your student athlete to excel in a fun, caring and friendly atmosphere where success is attained through the enjoyment of sport and competition.
The Board of Directors of Watchung Hills Pop Warner thanks you for showing interest in our program. We look forward to seeing all of you in August.
